Preparing for Elevator Installation
Elevator installation is often perceived as a straightforward task. However, it is, in fact, a comprehensive project that requires meticulous preparation. In this blog, we discuss the critical prerequisites on the civil and electrical fronts that set the stage for smooth elevator installation.
These preparatory works, if handled proactively, ensure the elevator manufacturer can start and complete the installation process without unnecessary delays or interruptions. Let’s delve into these key prerequisites:
Material Storage
Provision of adequate, safe, and secure storage space for elevator materials is crucial. The area should be protected from water, dust, and potential pilferage. The manufacturer typically specifies the required storage dimensions, and it is strongly advised to avoid relocating materials during the installation phase. Frequent shifting can lead to delays and even misplacement.
Assigning a dedicated project manager to coordinate with the elevator company ensures the installation process stays on track and any issues are promptly resolved.
Elevator Shaft Compliance
The elevator shaft must strictly align with approved drawings, including provisions for electrical wiring, conduits, and the power supply (ELCB). Failure to provide a reliable power source can act as a major project bottleneck, particularly during the commissioning phase. Addressing these details early in the process can prevent costly delays.
Documentation and Approvals
In 12 Indian states, obtaining government permissions for elevator operation is mandatory. This involves submitting building drawings, structural certificates, and other documentation. Developers must ensure these documents are prepared and approved well in advance to avoid interruptions in the elevator commissioning process.
Site Accessibility and Safety
The installation site must have safe and accessible staircases with proper barricades and adequate lighting. While barricade provisions are typically handled by the elevator manufacturer, ensuring general site safety is a collaborative effort.
Reputable manufacturers maintain stringent safety standards and may halt installation work if these standards are not met, impacting the project timeline.
Scaffold-less Installation: A New Approach
Some manufacturers now offer scaffold-less installation methods, which can significantly speed up the process. However, these methods come with various techno-commercial conditions that developers must carefully evaluate before adopting them.
